Constipation, Gas & Digestive Care

Constipation, gas and belching are common, and they often make piles and fissure worse. Simple changes in food and habits help most people. Some symptoms need a doctor's check.

Constipation, Gas & Digestive Care

Why digestion matters for piles and fissure

Hard stools and straining are among the main reasons for piles and anal fissure. Treating constipation is often the first step in treatment, and it helps prevent these problems from coming back after surgery. Many patients also have gas, bloating, frequent belching (ढेकर) or acidity. In Marathi these are often grouped as पोटाचे आजार, and constipation is बद्धकोष्ठता.

Common signs of constipation

  • Passing stool fewer than three times a week
  • Hard, dry or lumpy stools
  • Straining for a long time in the toilet
  • Feeling that the bowel is not fully empty
  • Bloating, gas and discomfort in the stomach

Food that helps

You do not need special or costly food. Our everyday Maharashtrian food can be very good for digestion.

  • Bhakri: Jowar (ज्वारी) and bajra (बाजरी) bhakri have more fibre than white maida. Choose them often.
  • Vegetables: Leafy vegetables like methi, palak and shepu, and others like dudhi, bhendi and gavar.
  • Dal and pulses: Tur, moong, masoor, chana and usal give fibre and protein.
  • Fruit: Guava, papaya, banana, orange and seasonal fruit. Eat the fruit, not just juice.
  • Water: Drink water regularly through the day. Buttermilk (ताक) is also helpful for many people.

Things to reduce

  • Very spicy and oily food, and too much fried snacks
  • Maida items like bakery biscuits and pav in large amounts
  • Too much tea, especially on an empty stomach
  • Tobacco, gutkha and alcohol

Good daily habits

  • Go to the toilet when you feel the urge. Do not hold it.
  • Do not sit on the toilet for long or read on the phone there.
  • Walk or do light exercise every day.
  • Eat meals at regular times.

Please do not take laxatives every day for a long time without advice. The doctor can suggest what is safe for you.

When to see a doctor quickly

Most constipation and gas are not serious. But some signs need a proper check-up soon:

  • Blood in the stool or black stool
  • Weight loss without trying
  • A change in bowel habit that lasts more than a few weeks, especially after age 40
  • Severe stomach pain, vomiting, or not passing stool or gas
  • Tiredness or low blood (anaemia)

These signs do not always mean something serious, but they should not be ignored. Our doctors can examine you and, if needed, advise further tests.
