Why a proper check-up matters
Bleeding, pain, itching or a lump near the anus can have many causes. Piles, fissure, fistula, abscess, infection and, less often, more serious conditions can look similar to a patient. Guessing and using random medicines can delay the right treatment. A careful examination by a surgeon is the first step.
What is proctoscopy?
Proctoscopy, or दुर्बिणीद्वारे तपासणी, is an examination of the lower part of the back passage. The surgeon uses a proctoscope, a short, smooth tube with a light. It lets the doctor see the inside of the anal canal and lower rectum clearly. It usually takes only a few minutes and is done in the clinic.
What happens during the check-up
- The doctor first asks about your symptoms, bowel habits and medicines
- You lie on your side on the examination table, with knees bent towards your chest
- The area is covered, and only what is needed is uncovered
- The doctor first checks gently with a gloved, lubricated finger
- The lubricated proctoscope is then slowly passed in and the area is seen with light
You may feel pressure or a feeling of needing to pass stool. It is usually not very painful. If you have a very painful fissure, tell the doctor. The examination can be adjusted, or done later when pain is less.
Privacy and comfort
We understand that many people feel shy about this examination. That is natural. The check-up is done in a private room, and your details are kept confidential. Female nursing staff are available for women patients, and a female attendant can stay with you during the examination. You can bring a family member if you wish. Please ask any question you have before we start.
Free check-up camps
From time to time, our hospital holds free proctoscopy (endoscopic) check-up camps. Call us to know if a camp is planned. You do not need to wait for a camp if you have symptoms. Book a regular visit.
After the check-up
You can usually go home right away and continue normal activities. There may be a small spot of blood if piles or a fissure are present. The doctor will explain what was found and the options. Some patients may need further tests, such as blood tests, an MRI, or a colonoscopy at another centre, to see higher up in the bowel.
