What is a pilonidal sinus?
A pilonidal sinus is a small hole or tunnel in the skin at the top of the buttock crease, just above the tailbone. Loose hairs get pushed into the skin and cause a reaction. Over time a small pocket forms. Locally, people may call it केसांची गाठ or नासूर. It is more common in young men, people with thick body hair, and people who sit for long hours, such as drivers and office workers.
Common signs
- One or more small pits in the skin near the tailbone
- Pain or tenderness when sitting
- A swelling that becomes red and painful when infected
- Pus or blood-stained discharge, sometimes with a bad smell
- Hair seen coming out of the opening
Why get it treated?
A pilonidal sinus does not go away on its own. Antibiotics may calm an infection for a while, but the pocket and hair remain. The problem tends to come back. If a painful abscess forms, it needs to be drained, sometimes urgently. Treating the sinus properly after the infection settles gives the best chance of healing.
Treatment options
Draining an abscess
If there is a painful, pus-filled swelling, the first step is to drain the pus under anaesthesia. This gives quick relief. Definite treatment of the sinus may be planned later.
Laser treatment
For suitable patients, the surgeon cleans out the hair and debris from the tunnel and then uses a thin laser fibre to seal the track from inside. There is no large cut.
